The Barnett brand crosses the Atlantic Ocean and opens its first North American factory in Ontario, Canada. The brand and its capabilities continue to gain recognition and a loyal customer base. The first break-action crossbow is a revolutionary design featuring a built-in automatic cocking system. Even all these years later, the Commando remains one of the most beloved crossbow designs that sends crossbow fanatics into nostalgia.

Odessa, Florida becomes Barnett Crossbows’ first U.S. home. There are two facilities here: a machine shop and a factory. Barnett hopes its presence in the United States will help expand crossbow hunting seasons in all 50 states. (Which has been an uphill battle, but one marked with tremendous positive progress for the crossbow community!)

In “For Your Eyes Only,” Melina (played by Carole Bouquet), arms herself with two Barnett crossbows: the Commando and the Wildcat. Like all the best Bond Girls, Melina proves she doesn’t need James Bond (played by Roger Moore) to take care of her. In fact, it turns out he needs her when she and her Barnett crossbow rescue Bond from capture.

Barnett engineers develop the original rope cocking device in tandem with the 1993 line of crossbows. Touted by many as the most important development in crossbow history, this revolutionary advancement reduces the strength required to cock a crossbow by half.

The Predator Debuts the Step-Through Riser

The Predator features a step-through riser that integrates the foot stirrup assembly directly into the riser itself – rather than adding length and bulkiness to the front of the bow with a traditional foot stirrup design. This innovation looks good, and it performs even better.

After outgrowing its facilities in Odessa, the Barnett team makes a move toward Florida’s west coast to the town of Tarpon Springs. The factory and offices there remain the company’s main manufacturing hub and headquarters today.

Barnett Creates the First Carbon Riser

Now with a more compact design thanks to the step-through riser, the next question is: what would happen if we made a riser that was lighter, too? Only good things. The first Barnett crossbows featuring carbonlite technology reduce weight at the front of the bow by nearly half, and move the center of balance toward the shoulder. Our bows have never been more comfortable or easier to shoot.

The Original Crossbow Pioneers

Barnett Outdoors, LLC is the world’s leading manufacturer of crossbow, archery and slingshot products. As with many success stories, ours started small in 1962 when a man named Bernard Barnett pursued a hobby working with crossbows from his garage in the United Kingdom. Mr. Barnett began filling orders for his acquaintances who were impressed by his handiwork, and the business was born. From there, manufacturing facilities popped up across Europe and eventually made their way to the United States. Growth in the American market resulted in additional product lines, streamlined manufacturing processes and cost reduction that eventually brought operations to the U.S. permanently in 2003.

Today, Barnett is owned by Plano Synergy Holdings – an industry leader at the helm of some of the top hunting and fishing brands. With this partnership, Barnett is positioned to continue its legacy of offering high-quality, affordable products that are always ahead of the curve. With one foot rooted in tradition and the other looking toward the future, there are no limits to where Barnett can go.
